Veterinary Testing

The aim of the Veterinary Department is the maintenance of a disease free status of our flock of Houbara Bustards as well as their welfare, and to ensure that the introduction of captive-bred animals into the wild has no risk of disease transfer.

Routine health screening protocols are followed to know the status of the birds. These include coprology analysis, bacteriology, microbiology, blood chemistry, haematology and immunology. Immunologic status of certain diseases can be checked in our facilities however co-operation with Central Veterinary Research Laboratory in Dubai has been ongoing for several years.

Clinical pathology and basic surgical procedures are also carried out in order to rehabilitate injured animals. Anatomopathology is a key factor for the department. Necropsies and sampling of carcases from dead animals are carried out on a regular basis in order to discover the cause of death and to take measures accordingly, acting on those factors that have caused the death.
